Whether carpet can be saved comes down to two things: what the water was, and how long it has been sitting. Everything else — how expensive the carpet was, how new it is — is secondary.

That Category 3 row is not negotiable, and it is the one people most often want to argue about — particularly with expensive carpet. Contaminated water carries sewage, soil bacteria, pesticides and chemicals into the fibres and backing. It cannot be reliably decontaminated in place, and attempting it leaves a health risk in your living space.
This is the part most people do not know. Clean Category 1 water left standing degrades into Category 2 within about 48 hours as bacteria multiply, and into Category 3 after that. Carpet that was entirely saveable on Monday may not be by Thursday. It is not a scare tactic — it is why the industry standard treats elapsed time as a category driver in its own right.
Carpet pad is designed to be absorbent and compressible, which makes it excellent underfoot and terrible to dry. It holds water deep in its structure, releases it slowly, and sits directly against the subfloor. In most cases removing and replacing the pad while drying the carpet in place is both faster and more reliable than trying to dry both — and pad is inexpensive relative to the labour of failing to dry it.
The carpet is the visible question, but the subfloor is the important one. Water passes through carpet and pad quickly and into whatever is beneath — plywood, OSB or concrete slab. Wet subfloor delaminates, wet slab holds moisture for a long time and releases it upward into whatever you lay over it, and both grow mold. Any assessment that only considers the carpet is not an assessment.
Blowing air across wet carpet dries the surface and leaves the pad and subfloor wet. It feels like progress, and it produces exactly the conditions — damp, dark, undisturbed, organic — that mold needs. Proper drying means lifting or floating the carpet, removing the pad, directing airflow underneath, and running dehumidification sized to actually remove the moisture from the air rather than just moving it around.
